Jon Anderson at the Cap

This week’s Jon Anderson Show at the Capitol Theatre was nothing less than an explosion of joy. Larger than life, Anderson’s voice filled the theater with glorious sound that  belied his years and slim stature. The crowd was gathered in rapt attention, surfing waves of positive energy as Anderson strolled through versions of songs from his Yes catalogue as well as his solo works. Supporting him was a remarkable collective of musicians from around the world, many if not all who were multi-instrumentalists and singers as well.

Having recently seen the Yes tour when they came through Tampa Bay, it was interesting to note the different energies between the two performances. Not more or less, but definitely different -which was interesting considering the inter-connectedness of music and time. It certainly left much to ponder after the show.

The historic Capitol Theatre was a stunning backdrop, and yet compact enough to feel like an intimate performance. Anderson danced before the crowd in front of an ever-changing screen of hyper-colorized images depicting cultures from around the globe evolving into what must surely be a spacecraft speeding across the universe. His intention echoed through his song selection, like a beacon of light shining a message of unity, hope, and, most beautifully…love. Despite his own acknowledgement that he was fighting off a cold, his voice was pristine and authentic delivering a message that lifted the audience up. The energy was palpable.
